Because of the immense anticipation of Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter IV” album which has now been pushed back until late August, Weezy has given his fans an apology gift. What’s the gift, you may ask? A 12-track mixtape called “Sorry 4 The Wait.” The title is self explanatory. More than half of the tracks on the mixtape are freestyled over some of this year’s most popular tracks,. For example, Drake’s “Marvin’s Room,” Miguel’s “Sure Thing,” YC’s “Racks” and Meek Mill’s “Tupac Back.” The tape also features a few appearances from popular artists such as California native Lil B The Based God, and Young Money artist Gudda Gudda.
After listening to this tape, all I have to say is “Thanks, but no thanks. Apology not accepted, Wayne.”
If I were to grade this album, I’d give it a C-, and that’s filled with generosity. Yes, we should be “appreciative” of the fact that this was whipped up last minute for his fans, but for as many years that Wayne has been in the rap business, he could have come up with something much better than this. Now, I stopped being a Wayne fan after “No Ceilings,” but I’d never had a problem with giving him a chance to redeem himself and to praise him when he did release a decent track or body of work.
I gave him credit for releasing a 12-track mixtape so quickly, but then the credit was quickly taken away after I actually heard it. Honestly, I believe Wayne’s punchlines are becoming more weak and less clever, and that doesn’t do him any justice since he’s a punchline rapper.
Without a doubt, Wayne will always have a wide fan base. That’s something that probably will never change, but if he wants to keep all of those fans, he needs to come back hard and with a vengeance on “Tha Carter 4,” which I honestly don’t think will be a problem.
“Tha Carter 4” is one of this years most anticipated albums, and I hope because of the quality of “Sorry 4 The Wait” that anticipation isn’t lost, even if I’m not a Weezy fan. Good luck Wayne!
