White Privilege

I wrote this as a reaction to a book called White Like Me by Tim Wise for a class, but it was such an eye-opening book and I'm so passionate about it that I thought I would share.


I have to admit, as a white person, the concept of white privilege never really resonated with me. And to be honest, at times it even rubbed me the wrong way. I grew up believing that hard work was the key to success. My parents raised me to always be very accepting and open to people from other races, backgrounds, and cultures. Naturally, I thought that no matter what your background was, you had the opportunity to succeed. After all, this is America, right?

What happened to the middle class path to success?

Back in the old days, the typical American Dream was made up of hard work, time, and determination, which equaled rewards: a car, a house, a family. What made all those rewards possible, or the key to the equation, was hard work. Hard work meant something; it had value; one reaped the benefit of the rewards after the hard work was done.

I know that even back in the day there were still people who never owned a car, maybe didn't have a house, and possibly didn't even create a own family with the person of their dreams. But, sadly I've begun to realize that in today's times, the American dream is more dreamy than it is realistic. It seems to be ten times, if not twenty times less likely now than it was before.

Tim Tebow becomes the latest Marvel comic superhero

Marvel and ESPN have teamed up to make a special comic book featuring the "game saving" Tim Tebow of the Denver Broncos. Due to his recent on field heroics on the way to willing his team to the playoffs, Marvel Comics decides to put Tim Tebow with the Likes of the Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man, Mighty Thor. When ask why they decided to go with Tim Tebow for the next Comic superhero, Bill Roseman of Marvel Comics says:

Like the Marvel heroes who pull off last minute victories, Tim Tebow has fans around the world on the edge of their seats and believing that--in our own lives--when time is running out and all looks lost, we can dig deep inside and use our various strengths to triumph over insurmountable odds.

Think Different: Thanks Steve Jobs

Like so many in the world, I felt saddened and sickened by the news of Steve Jobs’ death - letting out a shocking gasp in my office cubicle. Most of us knew this day would come soon, but after fighting a public battle since 2004 with pancreatic cancer and his recent resignation as Apple’s CEO, we had to prepare for the worst. However, his death still surprised me. It broke my heart. Knowing that one of the wealthiest and smartest men in the world could not save himself when death came knocking? Talk about a reality check.

What is Attractive?

In my opinion, what people deem as physically attractive varies based on the characteristics that influence one’s initial response to others, the culture a person may come from, and the fact that people’s opinions are largely influenced by society. Because we as humans frequently judge people by the way they look, we also make the mistake of attaching qualities that we feel are good, based only on someone’s physical attractiveness and appearance; which, in turn, creates the stereotype that all physically attractive people have those qualities. 

Changing America

In just a little over one hundred years, American tradition has changed immensely. If our great great grandparents came back today, they most likely wouldn't believe the lifestyles we live as Americans today. Even some of our grandparents who are still alive have trouble making peace with all the changes!

The Vixen Character Type

Do you recall that girl who grew up in your neighborhood? The girl you had a crush on with the big ol booty? The girl who’s father kept a close eye on his daughter because he was aware of his daughter’s curvy figure and was determined to keep her away from any knucklehead who even dreamed about trying to corrupt his daughter?
