Sports in Stilettos

Blond, gorgeous, fashionable, and into sports? Yes, I'm describing every guy's dream, but I'm also describing Justine Hendricks. This 25-year-old lives in Baltimore, Maryland, and went to school at Washington College, which is also in Maryland. Justine works in digital communications for a PR agency by day, but she moonlights as a full-time freelance sports blogger. She has her own sports blog, Sports in Stilettos, but also covers USC football for isportsweb and is on the ACC blogging team for Scout.com's CollegeFootballNews.com. With so many projects going on, WadidoLA feels very lucky that Justine took the time to answer some questions for us!

WLA: Have you always been interested in sports?

Justine: I grew up watching baseball, but I was really the girly-girl ballerina type. I hated playing sports as a kid, so much that I regularly feigned illnesses to avoid gym class! I eventually started playing softball and was a competitive swimmer throughout high school, but I wasn't much of a sports fan until college. I worked as a baseball and softball announcer during college, but we didn't have a football program so I had to pick a different team to follow! I've branched out since then (I recently got really into college basketball and hockey) but college football is still my favorite.

WLA: Why'd you decide to start Sports in Stilettos?

Justine: I started blogging in 2007 when I was a recent college graduate hoping to land a job as a sportswriter. I'd covered sports as a student journalist and I wanted to keep my skills sharp!

WLA: What are your favorite sports teams?Justine: USC Trojans football, Maryland Terrapins basketball, Baltimore Ravens & Baltimore Orioles

WLA: What do you think of the NBA lockout?
Justine: I'm sure the two sides will come to an agreement and it'll be lifted eventually. To be honest, I haven't paid much attention to the situation. Baltimore hasn't had an NBA team during my lifetime so I've never watched much professional basketball, and after all the back and forth this summer with the NFL lockout, I tune out whenever I hear the "L" word!

WLA: Why and when did you decide to become a Zumba instructor?
Justine: I became a certified Zumba instructor in July 2009 after taking Zumba classes for about 18 months. I'd been taking more traditional fitness classes and working out in the gym, but the movements from dancing tone completely different muscles! It's one of the most fun workouts I've ever done, and helping others get in shape and learn to enjoy working out is an awesome feeling.

WLA: How do you stay in such great shape?
Justine: I work my butt off (literally)! In addition to Zumba,
I hit the gym almost every day for cardio and weights. I take boxing and yoga classes and I still try to fit in swim workouts when I can. I like to mix it up and push myself - if I'm not exhausted after a workout, I wasn't working hard enough!
WLA: What do you like to do in your free time?
Justine: Between my job and my blog responsibilities, free time is a foreign concept to me these days! When I can, I like to hang out at the beach with my iPod and a good book, working on my tan and enjoying some time unplugged.

WLA: What do you hope to do in the future?

Justine: Ultimately, I want to be able to devote more of my time to covering sports, either through blogging or more traditional channels, and be able to support myself doing something I truly love.
