Guide to the Beaches of Los Angeles

In arguably the most beautiful city in the US, renowned for its sunny weather and surf culture, deciding which beach to go to can be tough. WadidoLA is here to give you an easy guide.

Dockweiler Beach

Dockweiler beach is located in breezy Playa del Rey, accessible by Imperial Highway. It possesses a three-mile long shoreline, picnic tables, and a concession stand. It's renowned as the best beach for bonfires, and at night you can find families and college kids alike enjoying the fireside with drinks and laughter. However, located beneath the takeoff path at LAX, be ready for the loud buzz of planes flying directly overhead.

El Matador

El Matador beach, located in Malibu along the Pacific Coast Highway, is known for its majestic beauty. With sea caves and natural rock sculptures, it's almost picture-perfect. Don't be surprised if you catch bikini-clad models posing for photo shoots! Bodyboarders and surfers also visit year-round, because this beach picks up winter and summer swells. The intimacy and beauty of this beach make it a common spot for couples, whether just to watch the sunset after dinner or to get married.
Manhattan Beach
Located at the south end of Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach is best known for it's 928 foot-long pier and it's long, paved walking path that make it an enjoyable and relaxing destination. Named after the wealthy town it's located in, the crowd at Manhattan reflects those living close by. People bike, jog, roller blade, skateboard, and walk along the path. Known as the birthplace of beach volleyball, nets still line the beach and it's easy to start a lively game with friends. The pier is fun to walk down and perfect to watch a sunset on, and if you come late enough, you'll catch some daring souls jumping off the pier into the crashing waves below.

Redondo Beach
Located in the city of Redondo Beach, this beach is the place to have fun! It's a hot spot for parents to bring their kids because of it's clean, soft sand and the Redondo Beach Pier, which has games, dining, entertainment, and shopping for people of all ages. If you're the type of person that gets bored of simply sitting in your beach chair after 10 minutes, then this is the beach for you. You can escape to the pier and eat, watch performances, or do some shopping for souvenirs.

Santa Monica Beach
Santa Monica Beach is by far the most versatile: It's one of the most well-maintained and clean beaches, is a favorite among surfers, volleyball players, fishers, families, and teenagers alike, and is home to the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. The beach itself is a bustle of activity, but the pier is a must-see for tourists and a favorite spot for long-time residents. The pier boasts thrilling amusement-park rides, your favorite snack foods, and the best people-watching you can find.

Venice Beach
Venice Beach is the place to come if you're looking for a unique experience! Venice Beach isn't so much known for it's sandy water-front, but rather for it's interesting boardwalk. Venice is indeed beautiful, and you can certainly catch some rays, but I guarantee your head will be turned to the noisy chaos of the boardwalk the entire time. The sprawling boardwalk, it's many souvenir stores, cheap stands selling jewelry and trinkets, scattered graffiti, and the unusual characters it draws out makes it a favorite spot for tourists and anyone seeking some activity. Keep an eye out for the tree-man, an already lanky man standing on stilts, covered from head to toe in camo colors, leaves, and mud, leaning up against trees or buildings. He's incredibly hard to spot-and freaky when you do!
